What is liqueur? An aromatic seduction

Liqueurs are more than just spirits—they represent enjoyment, variety, and tradition. For a drink to be called a liqueur, it must contain at least 100 grams of sugar per liter and have an alcohol content of 15 to 35 percent by volume. The key is the perfect combination of alcohol, water, sugar, and aromatic ingredients such as fruits, spices, herbs, or extracts. Whether natural or artificial flavors—anything tastes good is allowed!

The history of the liqueur – a noble drop with a long tradition

The liqueur originated in medieval Italy, where it was first produced in the 13th century. Originally, it was reserved only for the wealthy, as sugar was considered a luxury item at the time. It wasn't until colonization in the 16th century and the subsequent discovery of sugar beet that this sweet treat became affordable for everyone. Since then, the liqueur has established itself worldwide in a variety of versions and is now an essential part of every home bar.

The art of liqueur making

Liqueurs are made by infusing high-proof alcohol with fruits, herbs, or spices. Depending on the recipe, the mixture is aged for several weeks or months before sugar and other ingredients are added. Pure neutral alcohols with 96% alcohol by volume are particularly popular because they optimally extract flavors. But the secret to an outstanding liqueur lies in the quality of the raw materials and proper processing.

The most important liqueur categories at a glance

  • Fruit liqueurs: Classics such as cherry, raspberry or lemon liqueur impress with their natural sweetness and fruity freshness.
  • Herbal & bitter liqueurs: Whether bitters or semi-bitter liqueurs – these varieties contain strong, often bitter-spicy aromas.
  • Spiced liqueurs: Vanilla, cinnamon or cardamom give these liqueurs their characteristic taste.
  • Cream liqueurs: Velvety specialties such as egg liqueur or cream liqueurs provide a particularly soft mouthfeel.
  • Nut liqueurs: Hazelnut, almond or walnut liqueurs offer nutty intensity with fine roasted aromas.

How to enjoy liqueur properly

Liqueurs are true all-rounders and can be enjoyed in many different ways:

  • Pure or on ice
  • As a component of cocktails or long drinks
  • As a topping for ice cream and desserts
  • In baked goods or fine chocolates

Storage tip: Liqueurs have a long shelf life when unopened, but once opened, they should be kept cool and consumed within six months. Creamy liqueurs with egg or cream, in particular, should be enjoyed within a few weeks.
