In 1987, John Teeling acquired a former state-owned distillery called Ceimici Teoranta Distillery that produced potato distillates. After renaming it Cooley Distillery, he equipped the distillery so that it could produce both single malt and single grain. With the purchase of the old Kilbeggan Distillery, John Teeling created space to store the whiskeys produced at the Cooley Distillery.
