After the death of his father in 1819, John Walker and his mother sold the family farm near the Scottish town of Kilmarnock and used the proceeds to open a grocery store in the town. After a while, the store's assortment was expanded to include whisky. John experimentally applied blending methods, which were used for tea at the time, to whisky. Today, Johnnie Walker is the best-selling Scotch Whisky in the world.
