The word 'Tawny' means 'tan' and refers to the brick-red hue of this port, which it acquires from long aging in large oak casks. The oxidative expansion gives the Tawny Ports a completely different character than the bottle-aged Ruby types. The secondary aromatics come much more to the fore, so that the 10-year-old Taylor's Port presents itself with notes of nuts, dried fruit and caramel. It is an excellent accompaniment to desserts with chocolate or nuts.
