After his father's death in 1819, John Walker and his mother sold the family farm near the Scottish town of Kilmarnock and used the proceeds to open a general store in the town. The store's product range was expanded to include whisky. John experimented with blending methods, which were used for tea at the time, for whisky. Today, Johnnie Walker is the world's best-selling Scotch whisky .

Johnnie Walker Black Ruby matured for an unspecified period of time in first fill red wine casks, Oloroso sherry casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and bourbon casks.
