Matured for 12 months in old sherry casks in Norway, and for a further 4 months on board a freighter that crosses the equator twice (Norwegian: line) for perfect taste.
Taste: Noble and round. Light citrus note, caraway, coriander and anise. Subtle vanilla note due to sherry cask storage.
The maturing method, in which the Aquavit line crosses the equator twice during a four-month voyage, has become legendary. It dates back to 1805 when the Norwegian schooner Trondhiems Prøve sailed to the West Indies with a cargo of aquavit casks. Five of the barrels could not be sold and returned to Norway after crossing the equator a second time. When tasting the return, a small sensation was revealed: the aquavit tasted much softer, finer and spicier than before departure. The change in taste was attributed to the long voyage during which the casks were stored on the schooner's deck. The fluctuations in temperature and humidity, the salty sea air, the constant swell of the oceans and the long storage in wooden barrels clearly had a very positive influence on the quality of the aquavit.
Today, more than 1,000 barrels of Linie Aquavit mature as deck cargo at sea at any time. Each Linie Aquavit bottle features details of the 4-month voyage around the world, as well as departure and arrival dates, on the inside front label. Every sip of this aquavit brings back memories of the sea voyage.
