The Cradle of Distillate
The Steinmann family has been distilling spirits for generations. It all began with the grandfather over 80 years ago. The knowledge, craftsmanship, sensitivity and passion were passed down from father to son - to this day. Stefan Steinmann creates spirits from the finest fruits - distillates with body and soul .
The Stefan Steinmann family's home on the Neuenbergshof is located in the middle of idyllic vineyards, about 1.5 km above Sommerhausen. Here, the sun-drenched fruits from the home-grown vineyards are refined in the farm distillery to make fine spirits and liqueurs. In addition to the distillery, the family also grows wine, fruit and grain.
Everything has its time – and the longer the better!
The distillery in Sommerhausen has specialized in producing first-class fruit brandies, spirits and liqueurs from home-grown fruit. Sun-drenched fruits with full flavor grow all around the town, including quinces, cherries, plums, apples and currants. The use of pesticides and fertilizers is largely avoided in order to guarantee healthy and uncontaminated products.
When the fruit has reached the optimum level of ripeness, it is harvested by hand, carefully washed and checked. Fermentation takes place without chemical additives, which is clearly noticeable in the final product, the pure distillate. In keeping with the motto "tradition obliges", distillation is carried out gently over a wood fire in an old copper kettle that is owned by the family.
The spirits go through a complex raw and fine distillation process and are distilled four times in total. The mash is gently heated in a copper kettle, which first produces the raw spirit and then, after further distillation processes, the fine spirit. The heart of this process is the distillate, a Steinmann spirit from Sommerhausen.
Proper storage and sufficient storage time are crucial for the taste balance and harmony of the products. During storage in glass balloons or oak barrels, the distillates are checked regularly. After storage, they are reduced to drinking strength with spring water and then left to rest in order to combine harmoniously. Finally, the spirit is bottled by hand, corked, sealed and labeled. This creates a unique, high-quality product under the name “Sommerhäuser Brennkunst”.
