The fact that the Wahl schnapps pear still exists is thanks to its discoverer, Erich Wahl, who saved the aromatic pear from extinction. Erich Wahl, who discovered the pear variety in the 1960s on his leased property, quickly recognized the fruit's potential for schnapps production. He nurtured and cared for the tree until it was felled as part of a railway embankment extension in the 1970s. The variety's fate seemed sealed, but luckily Wahl was able to save some of the tree's shoots and cultivate the variety again. A real stroke of luck, because the fruit not only has excellent distilling properties, it is characterized by a more intense fruit flavor than other pear varieties, which makes it something very special.
