Tomintoul is a relatively young distillery, founded in 1964 in Speyside, Scotland. There they produce both single malt whiskey without smoke, which is bottled under their own name, as well as smoky whiskey. However, this one is known as Old Ballantruan. The distillery is owned by Angus Dundee Distillers, which also operates the Glencadam distillery in the Highlands.
Old Ballantruan 10 years matured the entire time in oak casks. Bottled at a strong 50 vol. % alcohol, not chill filtered.
Aroma: Spicy, subtly sweet with roasted barley malt, peat smoke and soot.
Taste: Sweet barley malt, creamy caramel with a delicate herbal note, peppery peat smoke and some oak.
